Letterboxd Alternatives: Where Else to Keep a Film Diary
Letterboxd is reportedly for sale. The best alternatives for a film diary, compared on dates, rewatches, TV and exports, and how to save your Letterboxd data.
- Movies
- TV shows
The short answer
- Letterboxd is not closing. Its majority owner, Tiny, has been reported since April 2026 to be selling its stake, and as of November 2, 2026, no deal has been announced.
- Trakt is the closest all-round alternative across the web, iPhone and Android: it keeps a dated history of films and shows, and its App Store listing says it imports from Letterboxd.
- On iPhone, iPad and Mac, Omniphile imports a Letterboxd export with its diary dates, half-star ratings, watchlist, likes and lists, and tracks TV episode by episode beside your films. It has no Android or web version.
- IMDb suits people who mostly rate, with 1-to-10 ratings that are private by default. Serializd is the Letterboxd-style choice for TV, but it doesn’t log films.
- Whatever you decide, export your data first: Letterboxd’s export is a ZIP of CSV files with your profile, films, reviews and lists, including deleted content.
The best Letterboxd alternatives are Trakt, for one film and TV history across the web, iPhone and Android, and Omniphile on iPhone, iPad and Mac, which imports your Letterboxd diary and adds TV, books and games. IMDb suits rating without the social side, and Serializd brings Letterboxd-style logging to TV. Whatever you choose, export your Letterboxd data first.
We make Omniphile, so weigh what we say about it accordingly. Everything about the other apps comes from their App Store listings, official sites, help pages and changelogs, checked on November 2, 2026. One thing to say first: Letterboxd itself is doing well. It passed 30.7 million members in mid-2026, up 43% in a year,1 and if its community is why you are there, no app below replaces it.
Why people are looking for Letterboxd alternatives now
The reason is ownership, not a failing service. In 2023, Letterboxd accepted an offer from the holding company Tiny to buy a 60 percent stake, with co-founders Matthew Buchanan and Karl von Randow still running the team.2 In April 2026, Semafor reported that Tiny is looking to sell that stake, and that Buchanan “retains veto rights over any potential buyer.”3
Since then, the reported list of suitors has grown. Variety named Netflix, Sony Pictures, Paramount, TPG and others in July,4 TheWrap reported in September that A24 and The New York Times were potential buyers at more than $300 million,5 and on October 8 it added an investor group led by Gigi Pritzker, with The New York Times “seen as a favorite.”6 None of this is confirmed. TheWrap says it is unclear when a deal could close, and Letterboxd has declined to comment. As of November 2, 2026, we found no announced deal.
Two older reasons also send people looking. Letterboxd still doesn’t track returning TV series; when Tiny bought in, Buchanan wrote that the future would include returning series “only once we know we can do it right.”2 And its stats pages and ad-free browsing are part of Letterboxd Pro, which costs $18.99 a year on the US App Store, while Patron costs $48.99.7
What to look for in a Letterboxd alternative
- A dated diary. Every viewing logged with the day you watched it, not just a list of films seen.
- Rewatches. Letterboxd marks them with an “I’ve watched this before” box,8 so a replacement should keep each viewing as its own entry.
- Ratings that fit yours. Letterboxd rates from half a star to five. An app with half stars, or a 10-point scale, keeps those ratings intact.
- Privacy. Letterboxd lets you share an entry with anyone, close friends or only yourself, though the diary date and watched status stay public.8 Check who can see your history in the new app.
- A Letterboxd import, and an export of its own, so this move and the next one are easy.
- TV, if you want it. Letterboxd is for films; some alternatives track series episode by episode.

The Letterboxd alternatives, one by one
Best for films and TV on every device
Trakt
- Platforms
- Web, iPhone, iPad, Android, Apple TV
- Price
- Free; VIP $59.99 on the US App Store
- Tracks
- Movies
- TV shows
Trakt is less a social network than an account your viewing history lives in. Its App Store listing promises a “detailed history of everything you’ve watched” and says it can import from IMDb, Plex, Letterboxd and TV Time.9 Personal ratings use a five-star scale, and a setting makes your profile private. Since September 2026, Trakt’s ratings breakdown includes Letterboxd ratings for films, and it offers to export your data before you delete anything.10
Lists are where Trakt has been busiest: in October 2026 it added list collaborators, and Smart Lists can now draw on your watchlist or library.10 VIP adds “unlimited personal lists and items on those lists” and improved rewatching; the US App Store lists it at $59.99 and $5.99 without naming the billing periods.9 Many other apps read and write to a Trakt account, Omniphile among them, so your history isn’t tied to one app.
Best for: Letterboxd members who want one history of films and TV on every device they own.
Strengths
- A dated history of every film and episode you watch
- Apps for iPhone, Android and Apple TV, plus the web
- Its listing says it imports from Letterboxd, IMDb, Plex and TV Time
- Many other tracking apps sync with it
Drawbacks
- Less of a social network than Letterboxd
- Unlimited lists and improved rewatching need VIP
Best on iPhone, iPad and Mac
Omniphile
- Platforms
- iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch
- Price
- Free; optional Premium subscription
- Tracks
- Movies
- TV shows
- Books
- Audiobooks
- Games
Omniphile is our app. Its Letterboxd importer takes the export ZIP as it is, without unzipping. Every film you marked watched or rated comes in, with your half-star ratings, and each diary entry becomes a watch on its date, so a film you logged on three different days keeps three dates. Your watchlist arrives as films marked For Later, liked films become favorites, and your lists become collections. Reviews and tags stay behind, so keep the ZIP. Free accounts can open two collections; the optional Premium subscription removes the limit.
From there, films sit beside TV shows tracked episode by episode, plus books, audiobooks and games if you want them. Ratings use a 5- or 10-star scale with half- or quarter-star steps, and films, shows, seasons and single episodes can each be rated. Two-way Trakt sync for films and shows is free, which also keeps a copy of your history outside the app. Profiles, reviews and comments are opt-in, and the community is much smaller than Letterboxd’s. Logging a new rewatch, private notes and iCloud sync are Premium features, and Omniphile’s own export is a full-library ZIP for restoring into Omniphile. Our page on Letterboxd for TV shows explains how it handles films and series together.
Best for: Letterboxd members on iPhone, iPad or Mac who want their film diary next to their TV shows, books and games.
Strengths
- Imports the Letterboxd ZIP: ratings, diary dates, watchlist, likes and lists
- 5- or 10-star ratings in half or quarter steps
- TV tracked episode by episode, with episode ratings
- Free two-way Trakt sync for films and shows
Drawbacks
- No Android or web version
- Letterboxd reviews and tags are not imported
- Logging new rewatches and private notes need Premium
Best for rating, privately
IMDb
- Platforms
- Web, iPhone, iPad, Android
- Price
- Free
- Tracks
- Movies
- TV shows
IMDb is the simplest option if you mainly rate what you watch. You can rate any released title “from 1 to 10,” and ratings are private by default; the Your Ratings page exports them as a CSV file.11 Mark as Watched adds a title to Your Watch History, which “is visible to only you,”12 and check-ins record what you are watching or have watched, public unless you make them private, with a CSV export of their own.13 What its help pages don’t describe is a diary with a date for each viewing, and we found no Letterboxd import. If you leave IMDb later, our IMDb migration guide shows how to export those files.
Best for: People who mostly rate what they watch and don’t need a social diary.
Strengths
- Ratings from 1 to 10, private by default
- Ratings export as a CSV file
- Films and TV in one account
Drawbacks
- No Letterboxd import
- Its help pages describe no dated diary or rewatches
Best watchlist across films, TV, books and games
Sequel
- Platforms
- iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Vision Pro
- Price
- Free; Sequel+ from $2.99
- Tracks
- Movies
- TV shows
- Books
- Audiobooks
- Games
Sequel, from Eventide Studio, tracks “TV, movies, books & games” on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Vision Pro. A July 2026 update added imports “with support for TV Time, Letterboxd, IMDb, Simkl, Goodreads, and more,” and a later one lets you “export your data directly from inside the app.”14 The free version saves and tracks unlimited items, rates the ones you complete and holds up to five collections; Sequel+ subscriptions start at $2.99, with a lifetime purchase at $99.99. It is rated 4.8 from about 1,300 ratings on the US App Store. Its listing reads more like a watchlist than a film diary, which is the main difference from Letterboxd. We compare it with our app in Omniphile vs Sequel.
Best for: Apple users who want one watchlist for everything, started from their Letterboxd history.
Strengths
- Imports Letterboxd, TV Time, IMDb, Simkl and Goodreads
- Unlimited items and iCloud sync for free
- Exports your data from inside the app
Drawbacks
- Apple devices only
- Its listing doesn’t describe a dated diary or rewatches
- Five collections on the free tier
Best Letterboxd-style app for TV
Serializd
- Platforms
- Web, iPhone, Android
- Price
- Free
- Tracks
- TV shows
Serializd calls itself “both a platform for tracking TV shows and a community of people passionate about television,” and it works much like Letterboxd for television. It runs on the web, iPhone and Android, is “completely free to use,” and lets you keep a TV diary, rate and review, and track past rewatches.15 It imports from TV Time and Trakt, and it says it is not affiliated with Letterboxd. Because it doesn’t cover films, it works best next to Letterboxd or another film diary, not instead of it. Our ranking of TV show tracker apps compares it with the other TV options.
Best for: Letterboxd members who want the same diary, ratings and reviews for television.
Strengths
- Completely free
- A TV diary, ratings, reviews and past rewatches
- Imports from TV Time and Trakt
Drawbacks
- TV only, with no films
- No Letterboxd import
- No data export documented
Two services with film communities attached are also worth knowing. MUBI, the streaming service, lets anyone with a free account rate and review films, keep a watchlist, make lists and follow other members.16 Plex lets you share reviews, ratings and lists with friends, and since September 2025 its follow feature shows followers your public reviews, ratings and watch history, with privacy settings for each kind of activity.17 We found no Letterboxd import for either.
How to export your Letterboxd data
Do this before anything else. The export is the fullest copy of your diary you can get, and it is the file importers such as Omniphile’s read.
Open the export page
Sign in on the Letterboxd website, open Settings, go to Data and choose Export your data.Download the ZIP
Click Export Data. Letterboxd generates “a zip file containing CSVs of your profile, films, reviews, lists and more,” and it includes your deleted content and reviews of deleted titles.18Keep a copy
Store the ZIP somewhere safe. It is the one copy of your reviews outside Letterboxd, and Omniphile’s importer doesn’t bring them over.Import it
In Omniphile, open Settings, then Import Library, choose Letterboxd and pick the ZIP; on a Mac, choose File, then Import Library. In other apps, look for Letterboxd in their import screens.
Exporting doesn’t change your Letterboxd account, so you can keep using it while you try another app, or keep logging in both.
Letterboxd alternatives for TV shows, books and games
Searches for a Letterboxd alternative often mean “Letterboxd, but for something else”:
- TV shows: Serializd is the Letterboxd-style choice; Omniphile and Trakt keep series and films in one history. Our page on Letterboxd for TV shows goes into detail.
- Books: StoryGraph and Hardcover come closest, and our guide to Goodreads alternatives compares them.
- Games: Backloggd is the usual answer, and our look at Letterboxd for games covers it and the apps that work on a phone.

As of November 2, 2026, no deal has been announced, and Letterboxd has declined to comment on the reports.
- What is the best alternative to Letterboxd?
- Trakt, if you want one history of films and TV on the web, iPhone and Android. On iPhone, iPad and Mac, Omniphile imports your Letterboxd diary and adds TV, books and games. If Letterboxd’s community is what you use most, nothing replaces it yet.
- How do I export my Letterboxd data?
- Sign in on the Letterboxd website, open Settings, go to Data and choose Export your data. Letterboxd generates a ZIP file of CSV files with your profile, films, reviews, lists and more, including content you deleted.
- Is there a Letterboxd for TV shows?
- Letterboxd doesn’t track returning TV series. Serializd is the closest Letterboxd-style app for TV, free on the web, iPhone and Android. Omniphile and Trakt keep films and shows in one history.
- Which apps can import my Letterboxd data?
- Omniphile, Sequel and Trakt all list Letterboxd imports. Omniphile brings in your watched films, ratings, diary dates, watchlist, likes and lists, but not your reviews or tags.
