Trakt Alternatives, and Why You Might Not Need to Leave
The best Trakt alternatives in 2026 for each reason to leave, from Simkl and Serializd to self-hosted trackers, and when a free Trakt account is enough.
- TV shows
- Movies
The short answer
- Most people look for a Trakt alternative because of cost and limits: VIP doubled to $60 a year in 2025, free accounts cap the watchlist at 250 titles, and since July 2026 free accounts have been reported to keep only one third-party app connected.
- Simkl is the closest all-round alternative, on the web, iPhone and Android, with automatic tracking from Plex, Kodi and Jellyfin, but importing your Trakt history there needs its paid PRO or VIP plan.
- Serializd is the best free alternative for TV, Letterboxd is the place for films, SeriesGuide suits Android without any account, and Yamtrack or Ryot let you host your own tracker.
- You may not need to leave: a free Trakt account still covers core tracking, and on iPhone, iPad and Mac, Omniphile can be your one connected app, syncing history, ratings and watchlist both ways for free.
- Before you move anything, export your Trakt data: its settings build one ZIP file of your account.
The best Trakt alternatives depend on why you’re leaving. Simkl is the closest all-round tracker, with Android and iPhone apps and automatic tracking; Serializd is the best free one for TV; Letterboxd is for films; Yamtrack and Ryot are self-hosted. On iPhone, iPad and Mac, Omniphile can replace Trakt’s apps or sync both ways with a free Trakt account.
We make Omniphile, and it is one of the options below, so weigh what we say about it accordingly. Everything about Trakt and the other apps comes from their App Store and Google Play listings, official sites, help pages, changelogs and published source code, checked on November 3, 2026.
Why people are looking for Trakt alternatives
Trakt is still running, and tracking what you watch is still free. What changed is how much a free account allows, and what VIP costs.
- February 2025: Trakt raised VIP from $30 to $60 a year and cut the free tier’s limits to 100 watchlist items and two personal lists of 100 items each, saying the company relies entirely on VIP memberships, as AlternativeTo reported.1 Legacy and promotional renewals, some at $15 a year, moved to the same $60 rate from May 20, 2025.2
- November 2025: “The New Trakt,” a redesign for the web, iOS, Android, Apple TV and Android TV, replaced the old interface. AlternativeTo described the early feedback as “mostly negative,” with users calling it less functional than Trakt Classic.3 As of November 2026, trakt.tv addresses open the new version at app.trakt.tv.
- 2026: Trakt raised the free limits again, to a 250-item watchlist and five personal lists of up to 250 items each,4 and Trakt’s importer tells free members when an import “exceeds the free tier limit.”5
- July 2026: Trakt began limiting how many third-party apps a free account can connect. TROYPOINT reported on July 22 that free accounts can keep one “connected community application” at a time, such as a Kodi add-on, Stremio, Infuse or Sofa Time, while Trakt’s own apps and website don’t count.6 A Trakt developer confirmed the community app limit on GitHub,7 and Trakt’s settings tell free members who reach it to “upgrade to VIP to connect more.”5
Developers felt it too. In August, Trakt said that “creating API apps is now a VIP feature,”8 until its October 15 update replaced that requirement with a one-time GitHub verification.9 The VIP price is hard to read from outside: the US App Store lists VIP at $59.99 and at $5.99 without naming the billing periods,10 and $59.99 matches the $60 yearly price reported since 2025.
Do you need to leave Trakt?
Not always. A free account still logs every film and episode with its date, and Trakt’s own apps and website don’t count toward the reported one-app limit. Which reason you have decides the answer:
- You use one app and the website. The free tier probably covers you. Keep the watchlist under 250 titles and your lists under the caps.
- You connect several apps or players, such as a Kodi add-on, Stremio and a phone app. On a free account, you would have to choose one. VIP raises that limit; Simkl is the main alternative with its own player integrations.
- You dislike the new Trakt apps. Keep the account and use a different app as the front end. Each third-party app counts toward the reported free limit, so pick one and use it everywhere.
- You want out of the Trakt ecosystem entirely. Export your data first, then choose one of the apps below.
Is Trakt VIP worth it?
VIP is worth paying for if you need what it adds. Its App Store listing names month and year in review, all-time stats, improved rewatching and “unlimited personal lists and items on those lists,” and says VIP status applies to all official Trakt apps and the website.10 Trakt’s settings also reserve some streaming services’ automatic sync for VIP and offer VIP members “more apps connected.”5 If you track in one app and keep a modest watchlist, the free account does the job.
What to look for in a Trakt alternative
- A dated history of every film and episode, with rewatches as separate plays, not just a list of titles watched.
- A Trakt import that reads your export, so years of history come with you. Check what it brings: history, ratings, the watchlist and lists are often handled differently.
- Automatic tracking, if you watch through Plex, Kodi, Jellyfin or Stremio. Trakt does this through its own syncs and connected apps.
- Limits stated up front. Know what the free tier allows before you move years of history into it.
- An export of its own, so the next move is as easy as this one.
- The devices you use. Trakt runs on the web, iPhone, Android and Apple TV; most alternatives cover fewer.

The Trakt alternatives, one by one
Closest all-round alternative
Simkl
- Platforms
- Web, iPhone, iPad, Android
- Price
- Free; PRO $34.99 a year
- Tracks
- TV shows
- Movies
Simkl is a web-first tracker for TV, films and anime, and the one closest to Trakt in what it does. It “works with many services, media players and servers including Plex, Kodi, VLC, Netflix, Crunchyroll,” imports from more than 20 services, and calls its all-time stats “free for everyone, forever.”11 A Jellyfin plugin, part of the Jellyfin project, sends plays to Simkl as they happen and can mark what you watched on Simkl as played in your Jellyfin library.12 On iPhone, the Simkl Lists app calls itself a “perfect companion for Simkl.com,” and leaves some features to the website.13
The catch for Trakt users is the move itself. Simkl says “Trakt has blocked SIMKL’s access to its API,” so connecting a Trakt account no longer imports anything; instead, you upload Trakt’s export ZIP, which brings over your watch history, plan-to-watch list and ratings.14 Its plans page says importing from Trakt is “currently open to PRO and VIP supporters only.” PRO costs $34.99 a year and adds rewatch tracking, custom lists, a private profile and no ads. VIP costs $34.99 every six months and adds year and month in review, calendar sync and CSV and JSON list exports, and Lifetime VIP is a one-time $249. Simkl also says members who visit on at least 20 days in a month can get PRO free.11
Best for: Trakt users who want another web-based tracker that logs plays from their media players and servers.
Strengths
- Automatic tracking from Plex, Kodi, VLC, Jellyfin and more
- Imports from 20+ services, plus CSV and JSON files
- TV, films and anime in one account
- All-time stats on the free plan
Drawbacks
- Importing from Trakt needs PRO or VIP
- Its iPhone app is a companion to the website
- Rewatch tracking and custom lists need PRO
Best on iPhone, iPad and Mac
Omniphile
- Platforms
- iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch
- Price
- Free; optional Premium subscription
- Tracks
- TV shows
- Movies
- Books
- Audiobooks
- Games
Omniphile is our app, and it works either way out of Trakt. If you want to keep your account, connect it: the two-way sync is free and carries every dated watch as its own play, rewatches included, plus ratings, the watchlist, favorites and dropped shows, in both directions. It syncs when you open the app and, when the system allows, in the background, on iPhone, iPad and Mac, and Omniphile counts as one connected app whichever device you use. Plays that reach your Trakt history from elsewhere, such as Trakt’s streaming sync, come into Omniphile with the next sync.
Two of Trakt’s own rules still apply. On a free Trakt account, the watchlist is capped: Omniphile’s For Later list becomes your Trakt watchlist, so if it grows past what the free tier allows, Trakt rejects the sync and Omniphile asks you to remove some items. And on every Trakt plan, ratings are stored as whole numbers from 1 to 10, so a quarter-star rating is rounded on its way there. Trakt lists, your Trakt collection and playback progress don’t sync.
If you’d rather leave Trakt, the same sync brings your history, ratings, watchlist and favorites in. There is also a lighter import that needs only your username and a public profile: it brings watched films and episodes with their dates, and ratings and favorites for what you’ve watched, but not the watchlist or lists. From there, shows are tracked episode by episode next to films, and books, audiobooks and games are there if you want them. Logging a new rewatch, iCloud sync between devices and the Apple Watch app are Premium features. Our guide to TV show tracker apps compares it with the other TV options.
Best for: Trakt users on Apple devices who want a different app, whether they keep their Trakt account or not.
Strengths
- Free two-way Trakt sync: history, ratings, watchlist and favorites
- TV tracked episode by episode, beside films, books and games
- Imports from TV Time, IMDb, Letterboxd, Serializd and more
- 5- or 10-star ratings in half or quarter steps
Drawbacks
- No Android or web version
- Doesn’t sync Trakt lists or log plays from players itself
- Logging a rewatch and iCloud sync need Premium
Best free alternative for TV
Serializd
- Platforms
- Web, iPhone, Android
- Price
- Free
- Tracks
- TV shows
Serializd calls itself “both a platform for tracking TV shows and a community of people passionate about television,” and it works much like Letterboxd for television. Its FAQ answers “Is Serializd free to use?” with “Yes! Serializd is completely free to use,” and says it runs on the web, iOS and Android and “supports importing data from TV Time and Trakt.”15 You can track current shows and past rewatches, write reviews and build lists of shows and episodes. We found no data export or automatic tracking in its documentation, and it doesn’t cover films, so it works best as a TV diary with your films kept somewhere else.
Best for: Trakt users who mostly watch TV and want reviews, lists and a community, at no cost.
Strengths
- Completely free
- Imports from Trakt and TV Time
- Reviews, lists of shows and episodes, and past rewatches
Drawbacks
- TV only, with no films
- No data export or automatic tracking documented
Best for films
Letterboxd
- Platforms
- Web, iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android, Apple TV
- Price
- Free; Pro $18.99 a year
- Tracks
- Movies
Letterboxd is the obvious home for the film half of a Trakt history. It passed 30.7 million members in mid-2026,16 and on the US App Store, Pro costs $18.99 a year and Patron $48.99.17 It is a film diary, and its co-founder wrote in 2023 that returning TV series would come “only once we know we can do it right,”18 so you would still need a TV tracker.
Letterboxd’s importer reads its own CSV format and IMDb exports, and its import page lists a community-made Trakt→Letterboxd converter rather than an importer of its own.19 Its export is a ZIP of CSV files with your profile, films, reviews and lists.20 Letterboxd’s majority owner has been reported to be selling its stake; our guide to Letterboxd alternatives covers what is known.
Best for: Trakt users who mostly watch films and want the largest film community.
Strengths
- A dated film diary with ratings, reviews and lists
- A large community
- Exports a ZIP of CSV files
Drawbacks
- Films only, with no returning TV series
- No Trakt importer of its own
Best on Android, no account needed
SeriesGuide
- Platforms
- Android
- Price
- Free; SeriesGuide Cloud is paid
- Tracks
- TV shows
- Movies
SeriesGuide is an independent, open-source Android app with more than 5 million downloads on Google Play, last updated on September 23, 2026. It tracks shows and films and needs no account at all: “if you want, you can back up and restore your library using JSON files only.” It can still connect to Trakt to sync watched and collected episodes and movies, while sync between your own devices uses SeriesGuide Cloud, which requires payment. It says it is “supported by its subscribers, not by advertisers or investors.”21
Best for: Android users who want a tracker that doesn’t depend on any online account.
Strengths
- Free, open source and ad-free
- Works without an account, with JSON backups
- Can still connect to Trakt if you want
Drawbacks
- Android only
- Sync between your devices needs a paid subscription
Best self-hosted tracker
Yamtrack
- Platforms
- Self-hosted web app (Docker)
- Price
- Free and open source
- Tracks
- Movies
- TV shows
- Books
- Games
Yamtrack is “a self hosted media tracker for movies, tv shows, anime, manga, video games, books, comics, and board games,” installed with Docker. It tracks each season and episode, keeps a history of every action, imports from Trakt, Simkl, MyAnimeList, AniList and Kitsu “with support for periodic automatic imports,” works with Jellyfin, Plex and Emby “to automatically track new media watched,” and exports everything to a CSV file.22 Its latest release, v0.26.3, came out in August 2026, and the code is still updated.
Ryot is the other well-known choice. It is open source under GPL-3.0, runs with Docker, tracks films, TV, books, audiobooks, podcasts, music and games as well as workouts, imports from Trakt and Goodreads, and logs plays automatically through Jellyfin, Plex, Kodi and Emby. Ryot Pro adds profile sharing and personalized recommendations.23 Our roundup of media tracker apps looks at it in more detail.
Best for: People who run a home server and want their viewing history on their own machine.
Strengths
- Free and open source under the AGPL-3.0 license
- Imports from Trakt and Simkl, with periodic automatic imports
- Logs plays from Jellyfin, Plex and Emby
Drawbacks
- You install and maintain it yourself
- A web app, with no native phone apps listed
Two names come up beside Trakt that are not really alternatives. JustWatch is a streaming guide: its watchlist syncs across devices with a free account and alerts you when a title reaches your services, but its App Store listing describes no watch history,24 and Trakt itself uses JustWatch for its streaming links.10 Showly, a tracking app for Android and iPhone, is now published by Trakt, Inc. and syncs with a Trakt account, so it is a different app for the same account rather than a way out.25
Trakt alternatives for Plex, Kodi, Jellyfin and Stremio
Some people use Trakt mostly as a scrobbler: their media player reports what they watched, and Trakt keeps the history. The connected-app limit reported in July hits this setup hardest, because player add-ons count as connected apps.
- Plex and Kodi: Simkl logs plays from both, and Ryot integrates with both. Trakt’s own Plex Sync was rebuilt in its October 2026 update.9
- Jellyfin and Emby: Simkl’s Jellyfin plugin scrobbles in real time and can mark your Simkl history as played on your server.12 Yamtrack and Ryot integrate with Jellyfin and Emby too.
- Stremio: Simkl’s site lists unofficial, community-made Stremio add-ons that sync your Simkl watchlists and mark titles watched as you play.26
- Omniphile doesn’t log plays from players itself. If your player reports to Trakt, keep Trakt for that, and Omniphile picks up those plays when it syncs.
How to export your Trakt data and move it
Do this before anything else, even if you plan to keep your account. The export is your copy of years of history, and it is the file most importers read.
Export from Trakt
Open Settings on the Trakt website, go to the Data tab and choose Export now. Trakt builds one ZIP file of your data, which “may take a while” for a large account.5Keep the ZIP as it is
Don’t unzip it. Simkl’s importer, for one, reads the ZIP directly, and the file stays useful as a backup. Since September 2026, Trakt also offers to export your data before you clear it or delete your account.9Import it
Upload the ZIP in Simkl’s import page, or use the Trakt importers in Serializd, Yamtrack or Ryot. In Omniphile, connect Trakt in the sync settings to bring in your history, ratings, watchlist and favorites, or open Settings, then Import Library, and choose Trakt to import by username; on a Mac, choose File, then Import Library.Decide what happens to the account
Exporting doesn’t change your Trakt account. You can keep a free account as a second copy of your history even after you move.
If you are coming from TV Time rather than Trakt, our TV Time migration guide covers that export instead.

Common questions
- What is the best alternative to Trakt?
- Simkl, if you want another web-based tracker with Android and iPhone apps and automatic tracking from Plex, Kodi or Jellyfin. On iPhone, iPad and Mac, Omniphile can replace Trakt’s apps or sit on top of a free Trakt account with two-way sync. Serializd is the best free choice for TV only.
- Is Trakt still free?
- Yes, core tracking on Trakt is free. Free accounts are capped at 250 watchlist items and five personal lists of 250 items each, and since July 2026 they have been reported to allow only one connected third-party app. VIP raises those limits.
- Is Trakt VIP worth it?
- It is if you connect several third-party apps or players, keep a watchlist of more than 250 titles, or want rewatch tracking and yearly stats. The US App Store lists VIP at $59.99 and $5.99 without naming the billing periods. If you track in one app only, the free account is usually enough.
- Which is better, Trakt or Simkl?
- Trakt has official apps for iPhone, Android and Apple TV, and many third-party apps build on it. Simkl tracks anime as well as TV and films, logs plays from Plex, Kodi and Jellyfin, and its PRO plan costs $34.99 a year. Moving your Trakt history to Simkl currently needs PRO or VIP.
- How do I export my Trakt data?
- Open Settings on the Trakt website, go to the Data tab and choose Export now. Trakt builds one ZIP file of your data, which can take a while for a large account. Keep it zipped, since importers such as Simkl’s read the ZIP as it is.
- Is there a free alternative to Trakt?
- Serializd is completely free for TV on the web, iPhone and Android, and it imports from Trakt. SeriesGuide is free on Android and works without any account, and Yamtrack and Ryot are free and open source if you host them yourself.
